Lindsay Pincus tells the story of her grandparents’ escape from Germany and Poland.
Her grandfather, Egon Gruenhut, was born in Mannheim, Germany 1922, which was in the south of Germany close to the French border. He and his family were deported to French camps in 1940. With the assistance of French humanitarian organizations, Egon was able to leave the camps and be placed in a school in Le Chambon, France. From there, he attempted two crossings of the Swiss Alps and eventually made it to Switzerland in 1943.
Esther Kaner Gruenhut was born in Lodz, Poland, 1927. She and her siblings were deported to Auschwitz in 1944. She and her sister, Regina, worked in a forced labor camp outside of Auschwitz, and were liberated by Czech partisans in 1945. She and Regina made their way to Italy after liberation.
Her grandparents met on the ship on the way to the United States.
Lindsay tells this story to honor her grandparents. She lives in the Seattle area.
