2026 Virtual Day of Learning: Teaching and Learning About Genocide

This three-session professional development event featuring scholars Dr. Alexis Herr, Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, and Dr. Hollie Nyseth Nzitatira will introduce educators to the histories of the Cambodian and Bosnian genocides and equip them with classroom lesson plans and resources to integrate these histories into their courses. Participants will also be introduced to the concept of transitional justice and a classroom ready lesson plan that encourages students to think critically about ways in which the mechanisms of transitional justice are leveraged in different contexts.

10:00-10:55 am: Teaching about the Cambodian Genocide

11:00-11:55 am: Hatred Has a Final Destination: From the Bosnian Genocide to a Prevention Roadmap for American Educators

1:00-1:55 pm: An Introduction to Transitional Justice for the Secondary Classroom
