SUMMARY:Criminalizing Enablers and Bystanders: Legal Accountability and Professional Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:Abuse and systemic misconduct rarely occur in isolation. Instead\, they develop within legal\, institutional\, and cultural ecosystems shaped by decisions\, omissions\, and norms established by those in positions of authority. While perpetrators commit the underlying acts\, bystanders and enablers—through inaction or misuse of authority—often create the conditions that allow unlawful and unethical conduct to persist. \nDuring this session\, we will examine the legal frameworks governing bystander and enabler liability\, including criminal accountability\, prosecutorial discretion\, and the evolving standards applied to individuals and institutions. Drawing on real-world examples and experience\, Professor Guiora will speak to the threat that unchecked bystander conduct has upon civil society\, and explore when omissions and failures to act may give rise to criminal responsibility\, how courts assess causation and duty\, and the broader implications for compliance\, governance\, and risk management. In addition\, we will consider the challenges posed by instances where bystanders try to respond but are met with further authoritarian responses. \nThroughout this presentation\, we will consider the ethical and professional obligations of lawyers advising individuals and organizations\, serving in leadership roles\, or acting as gatekeepers of a civil society. The program challenges attorneys to assess how law can—and should—be used to disrupt cycles of abuse\, protect victims\, and impose accountability before harm escalates. \nAmos N. Guiora has an A.B. from Kenyon College\, a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law\, and a Ph.D. from Leiden University. In 2026\, Guiora was named a University of Utah Presidential Societal Impact Scholar. \nWashington state attorneys can earn 1 continuing legal education credit (other – improving the legal system) from the Washington State Bar Association.

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to hear all five stories of resilience and escape\, told by the children and grandchildren from the Center’s Speakers Bureau.\nJoin us for this installation of the Inheritors of Memory Speaker Series as we enter our third season!\nJessica Fenton’s grandparents\, Murray and Natalie Bofentrenstein were both Polish Jews. Natalie was born Naska Grunwald in Sosnowiec in 1918. Natalie and her sisters\, all skilled seamstresses\, sewed for Nazi wives while imprisoned in the Sosnowiec ghetto. Natalie then suffered terrible conditions in forced labor camps\, and a subcamp Auschwitz. \nMurray survived by escaping the Nazis and taking on a non-Jewish Polish identity. With his new identity\, Murray was able to work for German factories until the end of the war. \nThey met in Stuttgart\, Germany in a Displaced Persons camp. They immigrated to the United States in 1949. \nJessica and her family live in the Seattle area. \nThe program will be 2:00-3:00 pm. \nRefreshments to be served. \nSuggested admission is $12 for adults\, or $7 for Students and Seniors and can be paid upon entry. \nReserved tickets are recommended\, and walk-ins are welcome. \nThis reservation includes all-day admission to the museum. \nThis program is made possible with support from the Ruth Anderson Wheeler and Henry O. DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing how the Holocaust is remembered—but what does this really mean? In this thought-provoking session\, we will explore how emerging AI tools are being applied in Holocaust commemoration\, what they may be able to contribute\, and where their limitations or risks lie. \nProfessor Victoria Grace Richardson-Walden is Full Professor of Digital Heritage\, Memory and Culture\, and Director of the Landecker Digital Memory Lab at the University of Sussex. Her research focuses on understanding digital specificities and their use for Holocaust and wider genocide memory practices across the world. She is the author of Cinematic Intermedialities and Contemporary Holocaust Memory (2019)\, editor of The Memorial Museum in the Digital Age (2022)\, and Digital Holocaust Memory\, Education and Research (2021)\, and editor-in-chief of Digital Memory Dialogues\, an open access publishing space designed to produce dialogue between disciplines\, sectors and industries focused on producing digital Holocaust memory (www.digitalmemorydialogues.com). She is currently Co-Chair of the UK’s Media Education Association and President Elect of the British and Irish Association of Holocaust Studies. DESCRIPTION:Lorri Staal shares the story of her father\, Abraham (“Aby”) Staal\, who spent two years in hiding in the Netherlands during the Holocaust. Protected by members of the Dutch resistance\, he survived thanks to the courage of ten families who risked their lives to shelter him. Decades later\, Lorri reconnected with the descendants of his rescuers and traveled to the Netherlands to honor their bravery. \nLorri Staal is the Executive Director of Music of Remembrance and a member of the Holocaust Center for Humanity’s Speakers Bureau.

SUMMARY:Ghosts on the Wall
DESCRIPTION:Once respected and admired in the small city of Großröhrsdorf\, Germany\, the Schonwald family was gradually turned into “the Other\,” becoming sacrificial victims in the vain attempt by Germany to recapture lost glory and prosperity. The transformation happened in three steps as they were progressively reduced through the mechanisms of defamation\, demotion\, and\, ultimately\, dehumanization. Kenneth D. Wald\, the son of Holocaust survivors and grandson of Holocaust victims\, spent most of his career as a political scientist at the University of Florida. A visiting scholar at Harvard\, the University of Michigan and University of Toronto\, he also lectured at universities in Israel\, England\, Canada\, Scotland\, Sweden\, and China. \nThe story of his paternal family’s encounter with the Holocaust\, The Ghosts on the Wall: A Grandson’s Memoir of the Holocaust\, was released by Amsterdam Publishers in November\, 2024 and was a finalist for best memoir in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards in 2025.
